Driving up the Alaska Highway

Being someone from south of 60, as I drove north of the 60th parallel, I learned that in some ways, it’s a totally different country up there!

It’s a long way up!

And that means that the supply lines are limited at times. Think about it, if there is only one highway and that highway encounters snow, rain, wash outs, fires, floods and more….

What happens to the supplies people need?

Down south of the 60th, there’s always gas. You might have to pay a lot for it, but it’s there. Even on most stretches of highways there is more than one choice.

But, up here there are long stretches of road with nothing and when you do find a gas station, that doesn’t mean that there is anything in the pumps.

So, my very first tip…..

Fill up wherever you can!

Don’t pass that station by, and even if you only need to top up the tank, do it.

Second tip is to carry jerry cans. Keep those filled.

You never know when you are going to need that gas. Maybe it’s for the drive.

Maybe it’s to survive….

Sleeping in your car in the north is cold. It takes gas to run the heat. You don’t want to have to make a choice between keeping going and keeping your self alive.

You might wonder…. why couldn’t I just call for help?
